As we headed out of the city for dinner at Brunel's Hat, we expected to sample the luxury and sophistication synonymous with the Hilton name.
Needless to say, it lived up to expectations. Greeted by smartly dressed staff on arrival, we were whisked through the restaurant to our window table. The muted tones and soft lighting of the dining room create an elegant, contemporary setting in which lone diners, couples and groups of friends will feel equally comfortable.

To the menu; modern British fare is the focus and the select offering is a feast for the eyes. We began with two beautifully presented starters of smoked haddock and pearl barley croquettes topped with poached hen's egg and chicken liver parfait with sweet and sticky grape and apple chutney and brioche - both were delicious. My companion's main of pork three ways (succulent pork belly, lean pork fillet and crisp pancetta) with sautéed Savoy cabbage and cider jus was a triumph, but my lamb Wellington stole the show. Coated in mushroom and chestnut stuffing and wrapped in flaky pastry, the meat was beautifully pink and melted in the mouth. Desserts proved irresistible, too. We indulged in a honeycomb and caramel parfait with sour raspberry compote and a heavenly trio of chocolate (mini brownie, chocolate torte and white chocolate ice cream with chocolate chips) drizzled with a rich dark chocolate sauce.

With quality cuisine, polished service and a laid-back ambience, this is a little gem outside of the city
