Thornbury Castle is a jewel in the South West's crown. This stunning Tudor castle retains many of its original features, including Tudor chimneys and beautiful oriel and arrowslit windows. Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn enjoyed a ten-day sojourn at the castle as part of their honeymoon tour, and the sumptuous decor remains fit for a king. Magnificent grounds surround the castle and accentuate the historic architecture.

We began our visit seated in front of a roaring fire in the lounge with a glass of Rioja. From the start, we were impressed with the attentive and knowledgeable staff, who ensured that the evening flowed seamlessly. They're working towards gaining three AA rosettes, and our experience makes me confident that they'll achieve these sooner rather than later.

From an extensive and tempting menu we each selected three courses, with additional samples and tasters provided by Mark Veale, the enthusiastic head chef. We started this memorable dining experience with battered eel served with horseradish cream and garnished with yellow beetroot and redcurrants, something I'd never have normally ordered, but thoroughly enjoyed. My partner's starter of foie gras and game terrine with forced rhubarb and red vein sorrel was a vision on the plate. I opted for venison haunch carpaccio with juniper-baked celeriac, beetroot, Parmesan and pistachio, which proved equally impressive.

Next up, we were treated to a sample of scallops with black pudding - simply put, it was stunning. My main course consisted of fresh wild Cornish sea bass served with artichoke, cured ham and girolles, while my partner enjoyed Uley Fields lamb. His dish comprised exquisite lamb leg, shoulder and rack prepared with baby gem, smoked garlic and quinoa in a rosemary jus. Rhubarb sorbet with a beetroot crisp proved a perfect palate cleanser before dessert, when my partner's apple parfait (presented as a tiny apple) made me instantly envious. My jealousy quickly subsided when I was presented with my dessert, however - my treacle tart was the best I've ever tasted.

A fabulous venue for a romantic getaway, celebratory afternoon tea or a top-notch evening meal, Thornbury Castle is one for the ages. The dungeon dining room would make for an unforgettable party or corporate event, too
