Bistro Bar & Restaurant Bar & Restaurant www.foodanddrinkguides.com Somerset Guide 2011 15 WS TD SS A unique venue for wedding receptions and banquets, The Bishop's Palace is a picturesque dream, centrally located in the historic city of Wells. These are exciting times for the palace's restaurant, the Undercroft, as preparations begin for its new location within the historic grounds, overlooking the palace moat and spectacular gardens - this brand-new café is expected to open in October 2011. A glass frontage will offer views of the medieval architecture and the various re-enactments, classic car shows and events held throughout the year.

Until then it's business as usual in the atmospheric Undercroft with its vaulted ceiling, stone pillars and heraldic tapestries. For those feeling peckish, elevenses begins with toasted Bath buns and cinnamon toast, while those still in need of their morning cuppa will rejoice in ethically sourced coffee, served alongside homemade cakes and cookies. The Wells rarebit, made with Cheddar aged in nearby Wookey Hole cave and served with homemade apple chutney, is a delightful lunchtime snack. For a heartier lunch, the dish of the day - such as pan-fried salmon with crushed potatoes and watercress pesto or homemade beef lasagne - comes recommended. Diners can also choose from a quiche or tart of the day, and on Sundays the team serve a proper roast. Cream teas are served in the afternoon with freshly made scones, Somerset clotted cream and strawberry jam; and the licensed restaurant offers Somerset ciders, real ales and house wines to make your visit extra special
