The traditional country pub is alive and kicking in Somerset, and The Gardeners Arms is a fine example, run with absolute attention to detail and passion. Tucked away off Cheddar's main street, it was once four farm cottages, and the low ceilings and magnificent inglenook fireplace give away its former embodiment - it simply oozes historical charm.

The menu offers classic pub food - dishes worthy of their 'traditional' title - and caters for all tastes, including those seeking vegetarian or gluten-free dining. There are many special deals available, including 'pie and a pint' for just £7.90 on Wednesdays. The menu forewarns that the fare on offer here is 'not fast food, but good food as fast as we can', and the reality upholds this promise - each dish is freshly prepared with great care and served to your table with friendly efficiency.

I started my meal with garlic mushrooms accompanied by bread for dipping - they were full of flavour and so moreish I forgot all concerns about garlic's lingering nature. Main courses include a range of homemade pies and specialities such as the 'digger's baguette', stuffed with fillings that could feed the entire family. Also worth a mention are the locally-sourced steaks, which are served on a lively sizzling skillet with a choice of potatoes and a colourful side salad - there is certainly something here to satisfy the hungriest of diners. I chose one of the daily specials, chicken lasagne, a twist on the original dish, which features on the two-for-one menu from Monday to Thursday. It did not disappoint, with hearty chicken breast and a delicious tomato sauce, accompanied by some excellent home-cut chips. The dessert menu varies from day to day, offering such classics as profiteroles and sticky toffee pudding - I opted for creamy local ice cream.

Run by Nick and Jo Barrett, The Gardeners Arms is a traditional pub with traditional values. Friendly regulars mingle with visitors from further afield, and there is a warm welcome and hearty meal waiting for everyone.
