The Seven Stars serves up a generous helping of Cornish hospitality alongside a choice of well-kept real ales and a menu of fine local fare. A traditional family-run establishment, this was actually the very first of the St Austell Brewery pubs, as we found out on our recent visit. It very much looks the part, with a traditional black-and-white frontage and colourful hanging baskets. Inside, the pub has a homely and relaxing feel, which was enhanced by the approachable staff and their friendly, attentive service.

I wasted no time in sampling some local ale and singling out the catch-of-the-day haddock from the food menu. The fish, encased in a crispy Trelawney ale batter, was fresh and succulent. Meanwhile, a juicy free-range Cornish sirloin steak was served across the table, accompanied by hand-cut chips, roasted vine tomatoes and peppercorn sauce. The menu, although concise, was pleasingly varied - other enticements included Portobello mushroom burgers, fettuccine with pesto and Catalan chicken. Dessert brought with it a superb sticky toffee pudding, steeped in homemade toffee sauce to die for, and served with rich, velvety Cornish ice cream. The portions were generous without being excessive, leaving us perfectly contented.

After a good hike along the nearby South West Coast Path, we found just what we needed at The Seven Stars
