The Mermaid Inn is a traditional, family-friendly pub in a great location just outside of Newquay on the beach at Porth. Overlooking the beach, this is the perfect place to enjoy an al fresco meal or refreshing drink come rain or shine. Ensuring that nobody has to miss out, this relaxed and friendly venue welcomes well-behaved dogs on leads. We arrived having heard a lot about the classic home-cooked pub fare and fantastic specials on offer so were looking forward to the meal to come.

We decided to go for homemade steak and ale pie with chips and peas, and Thai-style mussels in delicately spiced green curry with crusty bread from the specials board. The pie came with rich gravy and the meat just melted in the mouth. We were delighted that it came with proper homemade chips. To finish, we shared a homemade chocolate brownie with ice cream – a personal favourite – and a couple of cappuccinos made with The Mermaid’s own coffee blend. The bar has a great range of ale and cider on offer as well as 30 gins, and an extensive selection of premium aged whiskies from around the world. The Mermaid holds a range of events including a quiz with cash prizes every Friday and regular live music nights. A couple of friendly locals advised that we try the Sunday carvery, lauding it the best in Newquay. With over ten vegetables and three meats to choose from, the carvery is served all year round except in July and August. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, which ended with a lovely stroll on the beautiful beach – what better way to spend an evening?
