Over the years, Harvey Nichols has become a UK institution, popular with many for so much more than the stylish shopping experience it offers. Head upstairs at the shiny new Bristol store and you will find one of the reasons this international store continues to impress. The Second Floor Restaurant offers fantastic fine dining for both lunch and dinner, and its bar provides a chic setting in which to relax with friends over a couple of cocktails. As you step inside, the stunning decor surrounds you in gold and white luxury, while soft modern lighting creates a calming ambience. Choose to sit near the enormous windows, where busy Bristol passes silently on the street below, or settle in to one of the comfy gold sofas and peruse the excellent menu, created by head chef Louise McCrimmon. A very reasonable fixed price lunch menu - £15 for two courses and £18 for three - offers the likes of roast fig, soft cheese and pecan salad with citrus and vanilla dressing to start, perhaps followed by grilled Cornish plaice with spinach, lemon and caper butter, and crisp pancetta. Finish with a heavenly pavlova with toasted almonds and roast plums, and you will feel utterly spoiled in the very best sense of the word. If you prefer to choose from the à la carte menu, further mouth-watering options are available - perhaps Darjeeling-tea-cured organic salmon with a ginger and almond dressing to start, and a main of roast monkfish with chorizo, braised fennel and paprika-braised chickpeas, or a carrot and butternut pastilla with orange and watercress salad and a black olive dressing. What better way to enjoy a lunch-stop with friends during a hardcore shopping expedition? The evening menu offers a similarly tempting selection of dishes, all based on classic techniques and indulgent world ingredients, including the finest produce from the South West. Begin with pumpkin velouté with a sage and goat's cheese fritter, or try the seared cumin tuna loin with barley, wild mushrooms and a red wine reduction - just two options that will have your tastebuds eagerly anticipating the main course. Seafood lovers will adore the roast cod fillet with Pedro Ximénez sabayon, salt cod fritter, spinach, raisins and pine nuts; and no meat fan could turn down the chance to tuck into the slow-cooked shin and seared fillet of Aberdeen Angus, complemented perfectly by a truffled potato and caramelised onion torte, and a Shiraz reduction. If you're in the mood for further indulgence - and when are you not' - then choose the chocolate trio for dessert, and devour hazelnut and chocolate meringue, dark and white chocolate mousse and a hot chocolate shooter before your companions' forks begin to wander. It isn't just the exquisite food that is drawing people to this fantastic venue. An extensive and ever-so-tempting cocktail menu, including several non-alcoholic options, provides the perfect accompaniment to a stylish evening spent enjoying this elegant setting with friends. So, if you're after a top-notch romantic meal with that special someone, or a lively night out with old friends, head to Harvey Nichols for the ulimate fine-dining experience
