Penfolds Wine Bar & Restaurant
Penfolds Wine Bar & Restaurant has brought the glamour back to Whiteladies Road, and is already proving a favourite with the media crowd. The space has been updated with low lighting, lots of candles, fresh flowers and a bar area at the front, which lends itself perfectly to informal get-togethers. Upstairs boasts excellent views over 'the strip' and can be used for meetings, parties or private functions. The downstairs restaurant is tranquil, with crisp linen and chandeliers, while the south-facing terrace at the front is ideal for alfresco dining. Although specialising in tapas (available from noon until 10pm from Monday to Saturday), head chef Ben Harding also offers an à la carte lunch and dinner menu, served daily from noon until 3pm and from 7pm until 10pm - choose anything from free-range eggs Benedict to whole sea bass with tarragon dressing. The Sunday roast (served from midday until 4pm) is exemplary, featuring overnight-cooked rib of beef or locally sourced pork with crackling, served with mountains of veg, goose-fat potatoes and proper gravy. The new cocktail list comes courtesy of head bartender Tracey Mann, who champions seasonality and high-quality drinks. You will find exclusive brands that are new to Bristol's bar culture, and her Cosmopolitan was recently described as 'sublime'. The wine list is extensive and sherries are becoming more and more popular, balancing extremely well with much of the tapas. Penfolds also hosts a weekly live jazz night, every Wednesday at 8pm. This is a welcome addition to the area, showcasing great food, fine wines and excellent cocktails in a relaxed and informal setting.
