This Michelin-recommended restaurant, housed within an impressive converted 19th-Century pharmacy overlooking the park, has been serving excellent French and English fusion cuisine to the residents of Poole for over 46 years. The main dining room still retains many of the pharmacy's original features and charm, and has an intimate, romantic atmosphere. There are plenty of candlelit wooden booths to hide away in, as well as a well-stocked bar and lounge area. There is also a smaller open-plan basement dining room, which seats up to 28 people and is immaculate and comfortable, with pretty crisp cream tablecloths and fresh flowers. Beyond the French doors is a charming courtyard leading to a stunning garden where, weather permitting, aperitifs and complimentary canapés or after-dinner coffees and liqueurs can be served - perfect for private functions.

Chef patron Luciano Trisconi and his wife Maggie have created many wonderful à la carte, table d'hote, bistro and vegetarian menus during their 32 years at Isabel's. Their weekly changing bistro menus are available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and are priced at £24 for three courses and £18.60 for two. The friendly restaurant staff and kitchen team are also able to cater for any dietary requirements with prior notice. Although Luciano is Italian, he has worked in France, Switzerland, Jersey and Brussels, so his cuisine is mainly French. Head chef Justin Castle (chef profile page 63) excels in making delicious sauces, evidence of which can be found on all of Isabel's menus. On the à la carte menu, expect delectable starters like assiette de fruits de mer - a selection of smoked salmon, oysters, mussels, white crabmeat and peeled prawns garnished with Continental leaves - and exquisite mains such as the celestine de boeuf, which includes strips of fillet steak in Cognac, shallots and capsicum pepper, with a cream sauce. Finish off this divine experience with an equally divine dessert such as the warm morello cherries with a dark chocolate brownie, mascarpone and vanilla cream.

Understandably, the restaurant has built up a fantastic reputation over the last three decades, so it's advisable to book a table in advance. Visitors to Poole find themselves spoilt for choice when it comes to dining destinations, it's true - but Isabel's is a little gem that stands out from the crowd
