Lovingly restored, the historic Vale of the White Horse Inn in North Wiltshire stands resplendent within its own grounds, overlooking a picturesque lake. Perfectly positioned close to Malmesbury and the stunning Cotswold Water Park, the inn is also just a stone's throw from the market towns of Cirencester and Swindon.

Although much mystery surrounds the original purpose of this historic building, it has been on record as The Vale of the White Horse Inn ever since 1881 - serving its regulars right up until 1999 when it eventually closed. Knowing a hidden gem when he sees one, restaurateur Jamie Denman acquired the building in 2002 and has since completely restored its entire 8000 square feet - returning the inn to its former glory.

The establishment now boasts the motto 'a warm welcome is guaranteed' - perhaps a tongue-in-cheek reference to their many blazing open log fires. We were greeted by these and the warm and welcoming staff, whose friendly, informal service made us feel right at home.

Although the service may appear relaxed, the food is taken very seriously. Fresh and local produce is used for most dishes, with the menus regularly updated to reflect the season. To start, we sampled the stunning prawn and crayfish cocktail with warm crusty olive bread - a delicious starter that left us excited about what was to come. My main of tandoori vindaloo was devilishly spicy, but also rich and flavoursome, while my partner's ale-battered haddock melted in the mouth. To complete our meal we chose the glazed white chocolate and Baileys creme brulée with homemade shortbread - wickedly rich and creamy. For diners struggling to stretch to dessert, ice cream and sorbet bring lighter alternatives, while the excellent cheeseboard offers a perfect savoury ending.

Alongside a terrace and garden, the inn incorporates the Lakeside Bar, which is ideal for functions. Skittles, live music and quizzes are regularly held throughout the year.

With fantastic food, excellent service and a friendly atmosphere, The Vale of the White Horse Inn is sure to remain a popular choice for locals and visitors alike.
