Symonds at Redwood
Symonds at Redwood is just a few minutes’ drive from Clifton, situated on the former site of the Redwood Hotel. Set in the peace of the countryside, the village is surrounded by 15 acres of landscaped gardens, and is the ideal setting for a quiet escape from the city. The minute guests arrive, they relax as they soak up the calm atmosphere. Although Symonds can be found in a luxury retirement village, you don’t have to live in the village to visit the bar and restaurant.
Inside, contemporary decor meets English charm. Bottle-green chairs, polished wood tables, and mirrors and artwork dotted on the walls lend a simple, modern elegance, making dining here feel laid-back. The stylish atmosphere calls for food to match, and the sophisticated surroundings are echoed in the menu of fresh locally sourced, seasonal dishes. The modern menu has classic influences, while the bistro menu includes casual lunches, afternoon tea, cocktails and coffee. Both have been carefully put together.
To start, home-cured beetroot salmon is paired with punchy horseradish, shallots and fennel, while the rabbit terrine comes with pea pureé, pickled carrots and pea shoots. Local ingredients and European infl uences can be spotted in main dishes of pan-fried fi llet of cod, which is enhanced by caulifl ower pureé, hazelnut beurre noisette and micro lemon balm, and the impressive belly pork served with black pudding pureé, Parisienne potatoes and sweet cider sauce. There are a few vegetarian and gluten-free options, such as tartlet of sunblushed tomatoes with balsamic red onion, buffalo mozzarella and warm red pesto vinaigrette. From the all-day dining menu, guests can opt for sandwiches, light bites and classics such as chicken Caesar salad and Gem Bath ale-battered fish and chips with crushed mint garden peas.
The garden and terrace are sublime spots in the summer and offer fantastic views best enjoyed with a glass of crisp wine from the excellent list. For a quiet getaway fi lled with fi ne food and drink, Symonds at Redwood is well worth a visit.
