Boasting a smart whitewash exterior, this spacious pub and restaurant is a lovely place to stop for a quiet leisurely drink. It's an equally enjoyable spot for a bite to eat too, whether you fancy something from the light bite menu, a hearty evening special or the Rudgleigh's speciality: the popular Sunday carvery.

Inside, the decor is homely and traditional - just like the great-quality home-cooked food. Once seated at one of the long wooden tables, bedecked with pretty little posies, you'll peruse a menu offering everything from baguettes and omelettes to steak, pasta dishes, ribs and cold meat platters. You might pick something from the specials board - here you'll find dishes along the lines of grilled haddock in lemon butter served with potatoes, peas and salad. If you're lucky enough to find them chalked up on your visit, I'd recommend the pan-fried tuna steak with salad and salsa dip, or the poached salmon in creamy white wine sauce served with salad and new potatoes. If there are any curry lovers in your party, they'd do well to go for something like the homemade chicken madras. There are plenty of ales, wines and spirits to go with your meal, or to take out back into the grassy beer garden, which looks out onto the adjacent sports pitch. Perhaps you'll have the chance to watch a cricket match from one of the picnic benches on a balmy summer's evening
