Just a little way from the hubbub of Bristol, The Carpenters Tavern provides an escape from the city, offering fine ales, great wines and tasty food. Step inside and the friendly staff will make you feel right at home, while the cosy decor - white-washed walls, exposed brick and beams complemented by mismatched chairs and soft lighting - will help put you in the mood for a relaxing dining experience.

Comfortably seated, my partner and I sipped a crisp sauvignon and a pint of local Butcombe while making our choices. It was a tough decision; the comprehensive menu offers plenty for vegetarians, pescatarians and meat eaters alike and the pie of the day was a very tempting steak and Stilton variety. My companion began with a delicious game terrine and I with a dreamy cheese soufflé. This was followed by panfried salmon with garlic new potatoes, stir-fried kale with a lemon and parsley butter, chosen from the specials board, and the rump of lamb with honey-roast parsnips that had been recommended to my partner. Both dishes were utterly delicious. From the standard of our food it was easy to see why The Carpenters Tavern is so popular for Sunday lunches.

Warm chocolate brownie and ice cream followed. The ice cream was as local as you could possibly get, sourced from an ice cream company located on Dundry Hill. You can often see their cows wandering the fields around the pub. We'll certainly be back to enjoy some of it outside in the pub garden when the weather warms up
