A few miles away from Weston-super-Mare is the little village of Bleadon - a hidden pocket of medieval history in what seems to be the middle of nowhere, surrounded by Somerset's rolling hills and lush green landscapes. The Queens Arms, situated in the heart of this hideaway, is small yet not cramped, oldfashioned yet far from outdated. The ceilings are bolstered with rustic oak beams, creating a homely feel and preserving a sense of character.

Whilst the surroundings embrace the world of the past, the menu is very much a contemporary affair, with a new menu drawn up every day to keep the regulars guessing. Dishes are varied and inventive, ranging from crispy whitebait with homemade tartare sauce, to ham hock terrine with Rose Farm piccalilli and toasted corn bread to start. As for mains, tuck into smoked haddock fishcakes with spring onion, horseradish and dill, or a Somerset Brie and beetroot tart. The dessert board features light choices like local Marshfield ice cream, plus a choice of homemade sweets.

A Mediterranean-style patio area, ideal for alfresco drinking and dining, can be found at the rear of the pub - it's the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a post-dinner tipple. Open: Mon-Sat
