The Anchor at Shapwick

West Street, Shapwick, DT11 9LB
Set in gently rolling countryside, just a stone's throw from the prehistoric hill fort of Badbury Rings and close to the National Trust grounds at Kingston Lacy, The Anchor at Shapwick provides a truly top-quality dining experience. The inn is situated on popular walking and cycling routes, and, although it's a real local institution - it's owned by a consortium of villagers led by ex-British-Airways flying crew, Jacq and Bernie Kuflik - those coming from further afield will be welcomed like old friends.

The fantastic staff are supported by extrovert Boris the Barman, who ensures attention is paid to every detail of your visit. The deliciously varied menu, featuring food that's locally sourced and freshly prepared by head chef Fred Gallo (chef profile page 63) and his team, is of an excellent standard. With a little notice, Fred is happy to devise dishes to suit all tastes and dietary requirements. Each course must be savoured - starters include mouthwatering delights such as pan-fried pigeon breast with fine beans and an almond and rocket salad; mains feature the likes of a wild mushroom filo basket with Madeira, thyme and cream; and dessert might be chocolate terrine with orange sorbet. There's also an extensive wine list with tipples to bring out the flavours in whichever dish you choose.

With such a friendly ambience and impressive food, The Anchor will draw you back to Shapwick time and again.
