Compton Abbas Airfield is situated atop a hill overlooking breathtaking Dorset countryside. For a unique English dining experience you can fly in for a visit - although midweek is advised as the weekends get very busy. The dining room, naturally with an aviation theme, is light and spacious thanks to the large picture windows which allow you to gaze out at the aircraft and beautiful scenic views. You can also dine alfresco on the spacious runway terrace whilst watching the planes coming and going.

My guest and I waited for our lunch to be cooked, surrounded by pilots, tourists waiting to watch planes taking off, and friends enjoying a coffee. I ordered the lamb shank, which was succulent and beautifully complemented by a redcurrant and mint jus. My guest opted for the egg, chips and butchers sausage, which was plump and packed with sumptuous pork. Choosing a dessert was more difficult, because, not only is there a delicious selection of desserts and local ice creams but a wonderful choice of cakes. We settled on a raspberry Bakewell tart made using wonderfully light sweet pastry and a baked vanilla cheesecake which was deep-filled, had a buttery biscuit base and was served with a fruit coulis
