The Saxon Inn
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
Gold Hill, Child Okeford, Blandford Forum, DT11 8HD
Child Okeford is one of the larger villages in the Blackmore Vale, found just four miles from Sturminster Newton and six miles from Blandford Forum. The Saxon Inn is situated down an alley just off the main road at the northern-most end of the village, on the route out to Manston. Originally three 17th-Century agricultural cottages, The Saxon first became a pub in 1950. Since 2003 it has been run by Peter and Helen, who have carried out a programme of refurbishment while maintaining the pub's original character, also adding four very popular and high-standard bed and breakfast rooms. The bar area, at the front of the pub, serves a wide range of cask ales from local breweries and boasts an excellent wine menu, from both New and Old World vineyards. Helen runs the kitchen, which offers a diverse menu of home-cooked food, using local produce from local suppliers wherever possible. The specials board has an ever-changing array of dishes, making use of in-season fish, game and vegetables. The dining room features beam-clad ceilings and traditional wooden furniture and table settings - it's the perfect setting in which to enjoy some quality, quintessentially English fare. This venue represents the good old British pub at its best. The regular beers at this freehouse are Ringwood Best and Butcombe Best bitters, with guest beers rotating frequently - all the more reason to make this a favourite haunt.
