The pretty village of Pimperne, like any good rural settlement, has a pub at its heart, working to bring the surrounding community together. In this case, The Anvil Inn does the job very well indeed. The country-pub style of the bar area makes it a cosy and relaxed place to enjoy a meal, while the fantastic beer garden is the ideal spot to indulge in a cream tea. Alternatively, opt to take a seat in the stylish restaurant area. The menu is regularly updated, and, according to new manager Zara Brown, she and her friendly team continue to search out quality local produce - plans are also afoot to expand the selection of real ales and craft beers from nearby breweries. The current menu offers plenty of choice and generous portion sizes. The deep-fried Brie with cranberry sauce starter I tried was beautifully crisp on the outside, with a melt-in-the-mouth, gooey centre. Moving onto mains, I chose a wonderful chicken and leek pie with sautéed potatoes, whilst my partner plumped for the Anvil burger in a ciabatta bun, topped with Monterey Jack cheese and bacon. Our choices proved delicious, as well as demonstrating the great range of hearty pub food on offer at this 16th-Century country inn. There are also 12 bedrooms available, making The Anvil an ideal base for a Dorset holiday
