This may not be Provence, but with the stunning country setting and fine French cuisine, Clos du Marquis certainly gives you the sense that you're not too far away. What appears from the outside to be a traditional English country inn is actually home to some of the best French cooking around, and with a touch of Gallic charm thrown in to win over local diners, Clos du Marquis is a destination restaurant that will capture the heart of anyone who discovers it.

The menu takes advantage of the products of the seasons, using them to create the regional cuisine of the South West of France to stunning effect. The menu changes regularly, with lunch, dinner and à la carte menus always available. On our visit we enjoyed starters of pan-fried scallops served with cep mushrooms; and fish soup with crab and prawns with a pastry crust, which was served with gorgeous garlicky aioli. These autumnal starters evoked the spirit of the French Riviera and left our tastebuds tingling for more. My main of fillet of beef and braised cheek was served with a red wine and shallot sauce, proving how French cooking can be simple yet elegant, while my partner's cassoulet, one of the chef's signature dishes, was a masterpiece.

Cosseted in our comfortable dining room, our enjoyment of this charming French restaurant could not have been more complete, and we plan to return soon.
