The Blackcock Inn sits pretty as a picture, just off the North Devon Link Road. After a short drive through wonderful countryside and taking in glorious views of South Exmoor, we arrived with an appetite – and just as well. This country bolthole has plenty of parking alongside its on-site caravan and camping park.

Once inside, we fell in love with the rustic country feel of the place and were warmly greeted by Gloria and Lou before we satisfied our appetites. First though, we headed to the bar, which boasts a great range of local ale along with a selection of wine and spirits. Eager to dine, we scanned the menu of traditional pub favourites and chose from the specials board. For starters, juicy garlic mushrooms atop toasted ciabatta bread with salad, and Brie wedges accompanied by cranberry sauce were both great choices. We followed with the comforting ham and leek cobbler served with vegetables and a warm bread roll, and Thai chicken alongside noodles and prawn crackers, which had just the right amount of spice.

Lou the chef produces pleasing desserts such as nutty bread and butter pudding, zesty lemon posset paired with shortbread, and coconut rice pudding with diced mango. We craved the latter, which was both creamy and delicious. Gloria and Lou want to turn this great venue into an outstanding pub, and I’m certain they will.
