The Masons Arms
Knowstone, South Molton, EX36 4RY
Mark and Sarah Dodson's 13th-Century characterful thatched inn offers log fires and a warm, friendly welcome. Situated in the picturesque village of Knowstone, midway between the market towns of South Molton and Tiverton, The Masons Arms is a traditional cob and thatch inn complete with cosy beamed bar and comfortable lounge. Mark was, for 12 years, head chef of Michel Roux's Waterside Inn in Bray, and his food displays a modern take on British and French classics, with a certain complexity. With this, it comes as no surprise that The Masons Arms has been recognised by all the major guides and was crowned 'North Devon Restaurant of the Year 2008' by North Devon Plus. An à la carte menu features signature dishes of Parmesan risotto with smoked haddock, a poached egg and grain mustard sauce; roulade of pork belly served with braised red cabbage and apple compote; and iced Amaretto parfait with poached vanilla plums. Seasonal lunchtime specialities are also available, and all meals are served in relaxed surroundings either in the impressive restaurant (check out the famous ceiling murals and the view), in the bar or on the patio, which overlooks the rolling foothills of Exmoor. Real ale is available on draught and, for those special occasions or just for a treat, Champagne is served by the glass. And to complement The Masons' good honest food, there's a concise, good-value wine list featuring great-value varieties from France and the New World.
