Recently relocated to the heart of Ilfracombe, Rana’s Tandoori Mahal can now be found above The Lamb public house, where it continues to provide a gastronomic Indian dining experience and now offers takeaway too. Rana Miah, the owner and award-winning chef at Rana’s Tandoori Mahal, boasts a successful culinary career spanning several decades, and a reputation for being both altruistic and a great host.
We began our meal with a time-honoured favourite, poppadoms, paired with a selection of chutneys, mint raita and pickles. To follow, we tried divine salmon tikka and chicken chaat puri, the combination of spices and ingredients exuding the love Rana has for traditional cooking. With our tastebuds already tantalised, the main course dazzled. We chose two dishes, both beautifully presented – the fragrant garlic chilli chicken with the chef’s very own twist of roasted red chillies, and the chicken bhuna, comprising barbecued chicken, coriander, turmeric, ginger and other spices, which was sweetened with honey to create an authentic and thoroughly delicious Indian dish. To complement, we enjoyed fluffy pilau rice and paratha bread.
The passion that goes into the cooking here is warming and comforting and the chef, Rana, ensures each customer is treated like royalty, with each meal cooked from scratch to suit the customer’s specifications.
