Situated just outside Ilfracombe, the Depot (formerly Cook Island) is a brand-new refurbished venue, with an American road-trip feel. The location is fantastic for those passing through to the north Devon coast and Cornwall. Once you enter the main doors, the industrial decor and calming music create a welcoming space and the staff greet you like regulars.
On the extensive and creative menu are flame-fired tacos, nachos, burgers, loaded sandwiches and kids’ meals, as well as an ever-changing dessert menu. There’s even a wood-fired pizza oven that can cook a fantastic range of pizzas in 90 seconds. The long open-plan bar offers local ale, wine and spirits, and selective gin and tequila. For starters we chose dukka and chilli cashews along with beetroot hummus and tortilla chips. The mix of seeds in the dukka was superb and was accompanied by local bread and olive oil balsamic.
For mains we tried one of the pizzas and burgers on offer. The mushroom pizza was crispy and earthy, and the bacon cheese burger made with Waytown Farm beef was the tastiest, juiciest burger I have ever eaten. The accompanying creamy coleslaw and sweet salsa elevated the dish to a whole new level. We can’t wait to return.
