The Capstone Hotel & Restaurant
St James Place, Ilfracombe, EX34 9BJ
There's a food revolution quietly happening in Ilfracombe, and restaurants like The Capstone are at the forefront of a brand-new wave of quality dining experiences. As one of the town's premier eateries, The Capstone serves a menu that gives a whole new meaning to the phrase 'food for thought'. The setting is a delight; think gold-painted walls, handmade seagrass wallpaper and a stunning contemporary inset fireplace, proudly framed by antlers that tip the tiniest of winks to the town's Exmoor heritage. My partner and I decided to go for fish soup of the day and smoked Devon crab cakes with coriander and spring onion tartare sauce. Next up, a teetering tower of West Country sea bream fillets on a bed of fennel, orange and rocket salad and potato gateau arrived for my partner. For me, a Capstone pavé-cut sirloin steak, with a generous stack of Jenga chips, peppery fresh rocket and a Devon Blue sauce. We're not sure how we found the room, but we finished off by cracking the flame-baked top of a creme brulée and tackling a serious wedge of Guinness and chocolate cake. We had to head home, but next time we plan on enjoying the fully stocked bar and staying in one of the beautifully appointed rooms upstairs.
