Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
The Thatch is a wonderful traditional family-run pub that’s a hub for locals, holidaymakers, surfers and beach-goers. Croyde Bay is only a short walk away and The Thatch handily offers overnight accommodation, as do sister pub Billy Budds and the recently acquired Priory. The pub was alive with a buzzing atmosphere when we visited, filled with relaxed family groups, complete with furry friends taking up residence in the various cosy corners. The staff were all cheerful and attentive, wearing smart black t-shirts, busily working the room and clearly enjoying it.
To begin, we ordered drinks from the well-stocked bar, which boasts plenty of lager and ale. Wine-lovers like myself were also presented with plenty of choice. Beginning with a mixed Medi platter to share, we hungrily tucked into olives, spiced butternut squash hummus, sundried tomatoes, feta, cashew nuts and warm crusty bread dunked into balsamic vinegar and olive oil, slowing down to appreciate the fine quality of the produce. Moving on, we decided on Wasantha’s Sri Lankan seafood curry, comprising red mullet and tiger prawns in coconut milk and spices, accompanied by red lentil dahl, fragrant rice, and prawn crackers. Fish is local and sustainable where possible and is generally fished from Appledore. The Exmoor Waytown fillet steak with all the trimmings further demonstrated the necessity for careful sourcing, proving juicy, lightly seasoned and utterly delicious. Rounding off with lemon tart and strawberry Pavlova, we were two very happy diners. The Thatch serves food every day from breakfast until 10pm; be sure to book in advance as it’s rightly very popular.
