Set in its own 125-acre estate, Highbullen Hotel enjoys a tranquil and secluded setting in the heart of Devon. Upon arrival the spectacular gothic-style exterior makes an immediate impression, and with a golf course, tennis courts, Elemis treatment rooms and an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, there’s plenty to keep guests entertained.

My guest and I arrived for our meal in plenty of time and we were eager to explore the hotel before sitting down. A friendly and genuinely helpful team of staff welcomed us and we were shown around the stunning manor house, which has two magnificent lounges in which to unwind. The leisure facilities are extensive with plenty of choice for relaxing or enjoying a post-workout bite to eat. Highbullen’s Laura Ashley The Tea Room is a beautifully elegant space with unrivalled views across to Exmoor National Park, serving a range of full afternoon teas as well as morning brunch. In the evening the tearoom transforms into The Supper Room where a delicious selection of brasserie-style dishes is available.

Whilst at the hotel’s fine dining two-AA-rosette-awarded Devon View Restaurant, we admired the outstanding views across the Devon hills and began perusing the varied menu of tempting British dishes, all crafted with local Devonshire produce. I opted to begin my meal with a salad of hand-picked Devon lobster – a light but flavoursome plate – and my partner chose the creamy pea and spinach panna cotta. Having whet our appetites, we moved on to mains of roasted pork with chateau potatoes, summer cabbage and rich red wine sauce, and pan-seared Cornish mackerel with blue cheese gnocchi. Both were full of flavour and beautifully presented – the freshness was evident in every morsel. To finish, we chose to share a platter of local cheese before taking a leisurely stroll around the grounds. Residents can also enjoy breakfast in the Devon View Restaurant, including the likes of fluffy pancakes and maple syrup, hearty porridge and a delicious full Devonshire breakfast.

With its exquisite food, calming ambience and plethora of things to see and do, we both remarked that Highbullen Hotel would be the perfect place to pass a long weekend with the family. I look forward to returning soon and I am eager to sample more of what this wonderful hotel has to offer.
