Situated on the edge of Exmoor Park, The Old Station House was originally one of the main stations on the Lynton-Barnstaple Railway. The old red and white signal post standing in front of the inn gives its former guise away immediately, as do the wooden waiting room chairs in the restaurant itself.

We visited for lunch on an April afternoon and found ourselves sitting in the old waiting room, marked by the original sign hanging above the bar. We didn't have to wait for long though, as we were handed two menus almost as soon as we sat down. Each part of the menu is charmingly named - from 'Whistle stops at the Buffet car' to 'Pizzas on The Orient Express'. To begin I chose homemade chicken liver paté, garnished and served with slices of toast. My guest's garlic mushrooms were sautéed in hot garlic butter and served with a baguette to soak up the delicious sauce. To follow, I ordered a sausage trio, swimming in a rich, red onion gravy, while my friend enjoyed a poached cod fillet, served in a wonderful, creamy sauce with prawns. The dessert menu has something to tempt everyone, with an enticing selection of sundaes, splits and sorbets. We shared a 'Devon Delight' - scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with Baileys Irish cream, lashings of whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles.

There is an excellent selection of sandwiches and baguettes available, with fillings such as tender roast beef with horseradish and succulent prawns in seafood sauce; and, for those watching their waistlines, there's an assortment of salads. Children are made more than welcome, with their own dedicated menu and a lovely play area, overlooking a field that is home to ducks, pygmy goats, geese, chickens, alpacas and, on occasion, pigs.

The Old Station House offers traditional Devon cream teas at £4.95, and it's a real treat to enjoy one of these in the garden on a sunny spring day, surrounded by nodding daffodils. So all aboard, and welcome to The Old Station House Inn.
