This beautiful thatched inn, situated in Bishops Tawton, is just a five-minute drive from Barnstaple. Upon stepping though the front door you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd been transported back to the 15th Century, with low weathered beams above your head and grey flagstones under foot.

Head chef Paul Russell and manager Tony Lock, together with assistant manageresses Kristina and Emily, are united in their aim: to serve delicious food using only top-notch local produce. You only have to look around you to see this ethos evidenced on the chalkboards that line the walls, offering tempting seasonal specials. If you visit on a cold winter's day, you'll find that the emphasis is very much on locally sourced game from the fields of North Devon. So pull up a chair by the open fire and choose from sumptuous dishes such as pan-fried venison, mixed game casserole and oven-roasted partridge. In summer, seafood from Plymouth finds its way onto your plate, and you can enjoy your fresh crab and smoked salmon salad in one of the two beer gardens.

Also not to be missed are Paul's homemade pies. Especially tasty is the fish pie, filled with a mixture of smoked and unsmoked fish in a beautifully creamy Béchamel sauce. All the old favourites, such as traditional roast dinners with a choice of four meats, juicy steaks from Robert Withycombe Butchers in Barnstaple, and a great selection of pastas and curries, are offered on the menu. The bar is well stocked with real ales such as Somerset-brewed Exmoor Ale from Wiveliscombe, and nationally celebrated Bombardier and Abbot, as well as a good selection of lagers and a comprehensive wine list. The manager is passionate about good beer, priding himself on his pristine pipes, which means that his beers are always served in first-rate condition. According to owner Andy Jones, The Chichester Arms is 'that typical English thatched pub that everyone wants to go to', and he's not exaggerating - the pub is a real hit with locals and visitors alike. And I, for one, will be returning.
