At The Southgate ingredients are locally sourced and every dish is freshly cooked to order. The Southgate’s mouth-watering specialities include handmade burgers and flame-grilled steaks and chicken. Each dish is individually seasoned and prepared to suit the diner’s preference. The burgers range from stuffed patties with a choice of cheese inside, to juicy beef and chorizo burgers topped with mac and cheese. Even the burger buns are made in-house every day.
Starters vary, giving customers a range of seasonal dishes to choose from so you can try something new every time you visit. Desserts are a firm favourite with customers, especially the cheesecake. New Mr Whippy-style ice cream sundaes have been introduced this summer – the lemon meringue is especially popular. This venue’s motto is ‘food – drink – enjoy’, and with food and drink this good, it’s hard to imagine a more enjoyable spot.
The team at the late-licensed bar always offers a warm welcome alongside a broad range of options. The large selection of craft beer and cider is coupled with excellent options on tap, including refreshing mango cider. The Southgate strives to stock alcohol that is a little different: spirits range from Tarquin’s Blackberry Gin to Ciroc Vodka, and has also just introduced a new seasonal cocktail menu. The function room upstairs is popular for large parties.
The Southgate, formally known as The Hearts of Oak, is one of the oldest hostelries in Barnstaple. The restaurant was renamed after the nearby South Gate of the town. The Grade II listed features and light and airy interior, together with the welcoming staff, put guests at ease.
