Fish and Chips
Located in the heart of Barnstaple, a warm welcome awaits at this lively eatery. Whether you’ve enjoyed a day of shopping or a ramble along North Devon’s beautiful rugged coastline, The Pelican is always worth visiting. The mirrored walls reflect the newly refurbished interior, which is bright and spacious with a large tropical fish tank. The staff go out of their way to make everyone happy and this popular venue combines the indulgent enjoyment of classic fish and chips with an awareness of healthy eating and dietary requirements. The new menu offers scrumptious healthy options like grilled fish with sides of sweet potato fries or salad. There are also numerous gluten-free and vegan options, while mini meals and the chance to win a coveted toy pelican encourage little ones to dine.
We began with spicy West Country crabcakes and the dipped-and-dusted sticky chilli chicken accompanied by a cooling sour cream dip. There are a number of hot and cold drinks on offer including local beer, cider and spirits, but we selected the Pelican ale, specially brewed in Chivenor. For mains my partner ordered the venue’s speciality dish – a generous fillet of prime cod from Brixham fish market with golden chips and garden peas. I chose from the kitchen classics menu and tucked into delicious gammon served with Westacott Farm eggs and chips. The restaurant prides itself on using responsibly sourced local meat and produce, and is passionate about the sustainability of the fish they cook. This is just one reason they were awarded a Taste of the West Gold Award in 2017 and won Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year at the Seafish National Fish & Chip Awards 2018.
We finished our evening with pudding; I sampled Molton’s award-winning vanilla and honeycomb ice cream, while my partner couldn’t resist the delectable apple pie, lovingly made by chef Mario. With delicious food and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, it’s no surprise that this up-to-date restaurant is so popular. It can accommodate up to 110 people but booking is advisable to avoid disappointment. Alternatively, you can enjoy The Pelican’s culinary delights in the comfort of your own home thanks to the handy adjoining takeaway.
