We know the Gurkhas as a long-standing part of the British army and are familiar with their traditional weapon, an 18-inch curved knife known as a khukuri. However, the Gurkhas possess a lesser-known talent - one which also utilises the khukuri - and that's creating fantastic food.

Venture off one of the main shopping streets in Barnstaple and you'll happen upon a dining gem - Gurkha Nepalese. The local papers have already praised this restaurant to the skies for its delicious cuisine and friendly, efficient service. It therefore comes as no surprise that Gurkha Nepalese is among the locals' favourites. One visit and you'll understand why. Inside is cosy and friendly and the menu is full of variety.

The chef has extensive experience cooking both Gurkha and Newari cuisine. I began our delightful meal with a sekuwa (deliciously spiced grilled lamb) before enjoying the chicken Himali Masu - tender chicken cooked with garlic, onion, ginger, capsicum and a blend of spices. There is plenty of choice, whatever your tastes, including tandooris, vegetable dishes and noodles; and everything from the fieriest flavours to mild, creamy dishes. My companion, who relishes milder flavours, enjoyed a rich, sumptuous dish of king prawns cooked in coconut milk, garlic and Gurkha's special spices, and declared it divine. We'll certainly be bringing the family here.
