Claytons & The Glasshouse
Claytons & The Glasshouse is a real gem. As a lounge bar and restaurant, this venue boasts three supremely stylish but relaxed spaces: the ground floor bar and eatery is perfect for enjoying a cocktail or light meal with friends, while upstairs you’ll find the beautiful, formal glass-roofed dining space and a gorgeous roof terrace.
The attention to detail in the cool, contemporary decor is matched by the excellent standard of service experienced here: nothing was too much trouble for the friendly team of servers. The modern bistro-style food was stunningly presented, with plenty of options for every palate. Visit for lunch or dinner and share a platter of mezze or antipasti, or opt for a more substantial meal: the choice is yours. We chose to eat downstairs, enjoying the laid-back atmosphere. The duck breast salad was delicious, with strawberries, pomegranate and cherry gel providing a zing that offset the richness of the duck perfectly. I followed my starter with a main of moules frites – a classic dish, beautifully executed. My partner chose pan-seared scallops served with silky butternut squash purée and chorizo chips, followed by a perfectly cooked sea bass fillet with summer Mediterranean vegetables, basil pesto and balsamic glaze. We rounded off our meal with satisfyingly indulgent puddings – meltingly soft chocolate brownie and rich crème brûlée.
The menu also offers gourmet burgers, including a vegan-friendly lentil burger, and surprises such as an Indian goat curry with roasted peanuts. The salads are inspired and innovative creations, perfect for those in the mood for something tasty but light: why not try the grilled goat’s cheese salad with rocket, walnuts, pears, figs and pomegranate?
As you’d expect, there’s a comprehensive wine and beer list too, and a carefully curated choice of spirits. Speciality gin experiences match premium gins – including local Exmoor Wicked Wolf gin – with the perfect tonic, and each order comes with informative tasting notes to guide your choices.
Be sure to look out for special events such as DJ sets on the terrace and Fizzy Thursdays, when you’ll find special offers on Prosecco and sharing boards. What better excuse for a night out?
