Since opening in 2006, the Glasshouse rooftop restaurant and terrace at Claytons has become a spectacular success - and no wonder, it's a truly unique place to dine in the heart of Barnstaple. As soon as we arrived, we knew we were in for a treat. Claytons' cosy lounge bar boasts a welcoming atmosphere and superbly stocked bar; and, as we continued up to the Glasshouse, I noticed open-air beer gardens, perfect for enjoying the Devonshire sun and fantastic views. We took our seats in the intimate restaurant and perused the menu (offering two courses for £16.99) as smiling staff served complimentary olives. Being so close to the sea, it seemed only right to select the locally sourced seared scallops to start, which proved succulent and well seasoned, with nutty celeriac mash and chicken crisp. My partner selected the breaded Brie and Cumberland sauce, with deliciously sharp cranberries cutting through the creamy cheese. For the main, my companion opted for tender chargrilled rump steak, dressed with sun-blushed tomato butter and served with hand-cut chips; my slow-roasted pork belly melted in the mouth as we watched the sun set. To finish, the sticky toffee pudding looked decadent, smothered in caramel, and I opted for the caramelised banana Bavarois - simply heavenly. This rooftop paradise provides the perfect setting for an evening meal, a romantic night out or a more vibrant group celebration. With its superb menu, service and atmosphere, this Devonshire delight entirely deserves its glowing reputation.
