Drive just 12 miles south of Bath, and you might just stumble upon Leigh upon Mendip, a picturesque Somerset village that's home to The Bell Inn - a beautiful 16th-Century inn serving a great selection of traditional home-cooked meals.

Head chef, Robert, knows that the Somerset countryside is brimming with natural produce, and as such his menus offer up the finest local meats, fish, fruit and vegetables. Begin your meal with a delicious, reasonably priced starter like rosemary-and-garlic-crusted deep-fried Brie with chilli jam, or crispy whitebait. Next, move on to an 8oz prime sirloin steak served with mushrooms, tomatoes, onion rings and chips, or perhaps pot-roast lamb in red wine and rosemary sauce with sautépotatoes and fresh vegetables. If you're after something vegetarian then the menu also offers delights such as avocado, mozzarella and cherry tomato filo tart; gluten-free options are available too. And if you've room for dessert, there are treats such as iced berries with hot white chocolate sauce and Baileys bread and butter pudding to choose from. To accompany all of this, The Bell Inn serves a wide range of real ales and ciders as well as a good selection of wines.

With a children's selection on the menu and a fully enclosed garden complete with a children's play area, The Bell is very much a family-friendly pub. The village sits some 600ft up in the Mendip Hills, and the celebrated beauty of the surrounding countryside offers some of the best walks around; walkers (and their dogs) are welcome. The Bell Inn makes for a pleasant stop whatever the time of year; enjoy a snack and a local cider in the beer garden in summer, or tuck into a hearty meal as logs smoulder in the old inglenook fireplace in winter
