A warm welcome greeted us in the lounge bar. Tactile and splendorous, the materials used here beg to be enjoyed; rich red and glorious gold form plump cushions, heavy drapes and an altogether sumptuous setting. We sipped on glasses of white, pored over the regularly changing menu and carefully made our selections with help from our knowledgeable waitress, who then led us through to the conservatory restaurant. The setting was perfect for enjoying the sunny evening; windows and ceiling draped in luxurious material and letting in just the right amount of light.
The Restaurant has made delicious use of locally sourced produce in their menu, which we simply couldn't get enough of. My starter was Somerset cider and onion soup; wonderfully flavourful with a Cheddar and thyme crouton to soak up the delicious juices. My companion enjoyed English asparagus, served with creme fraiche, tomato dressing, black olives and basil; and for mains she couldn't speak highly enough of the pairing of chilli and mint with a fillet of Cornish cod and courgettes. My aubergine parmigiana was equally brimming with fantastic flavour, and was the ideal summery dish. Those after something heartier might have opted for the likes of grilled leg of lamb with Jersey Royals, summer carrots and salsa verde 'something for next time perhaps.
Once a light gooseberry fool with shortbread and a cup of dark chocolate mousse with creme fraiche and a cat's tongue biscuit were devoured, we relaxed with some English tea and made plans to return for a longer stay; for more exquisite food and perhaps a bit of pampering in the excellent spa.
