The Bull Terrier is one of the oldest licensed pubs in Somerset, with some parts of the building dating from 1612. Flagstone floors, open fires and original beams all feature in the main bar, which is cosy and inviting. Ruth and Barry Vidler have owned the pub for 12 years, and pride themselves on using local produce, with the majority of the menu being home cooked. The menu includes traditional pub fare, as well as some more unusual dishes. Starters include smoked trout terrine, chicken liver pâté and toast, and filo prawns with sweet chilli sauce. There is a good selection of main courses, including several daily specials, and dishes ranging from ginger chicken to more traditional meals such as ham egg and chips. There is an extremely good vegetarian choice, including lasagne with lentils and red peppers in farmhouse cider, and a vegan curry. Sweets include apple strudel, hot butterscotch and walnut cake, and a variety of ice creams and sorbets. The traditional roast is available on Sundays, in addition to the à la carte menu, but booking is advisable. The Bull Terrier is ideally situated for a walk to Wells with wonderful views of the surrounding hills, and you are guaranteed a warm welcome and a good meal on your return.

Open: Food served Mon-Sat noon-2pm, 7pm-9pm; Sun noon-1.45pm, 7pm-9pm
