When it comes to proper, traditional pubs, The Countryman Inn is as authentic as they get, offering fantastic homemade pub food alongside a healthy serving of Cornish hospitality.

We visited on Sunday lunchtime and plumped for the three-course roast dinner (one and two-course versions are also available for those with smaller appetites, as well as children's portions). We were entertained as we ate by a singer performing a medley of folk and rock 'n' roll tunes - a brilliant way to liven up Sunday lunchtime.

For starters, I had lovely homemade tomato soup with crusty bread while my partner opted for crisp, crunchy garlic mushrooms with a zingy mayonnaise and garlic dip. Next up was roast beef and turkey with all the trimmings - including Yorkshire puddings, amazing roast potatoes and four different types of veg. Both meats were succulent and immensely enjoyable. We just about had room enough for a dessert afterwards and were spoilt for choice by the range of homemade options on offer - from indulgent creme brulée and crumble to light meringue and tarts. I chose apple pie and ice cream to round off a thoroughly enjoyable - not to mention reasonably priced - traditional dinner
