Though packed with countless antique shops, visitors to Hungerford are unlikely to find anything older than this alluring, privately owned hotel. At least 500 years old, this former coaching inn has been given a full facelift to provide the comforts that today's clientele demand, whilst retaining a reassuring air of the traditional.

Starting with a warm and friendly greeting in the reception area, we were shown to a cosy lounge where we were pleased to be offered (and even more pleased to sample from) a choice of real ales. This quiet, intimate area is ideal for contemplating a menu that is anything but ordinary. An appetising variety of mainly locally sourced meat, game, seafood and vegetarian dishes makes selection a real challenge.

Our fantastic food was served in the contemporary restaurant, with its minimal furnishings and soft lighting. Pork and herb terrine was divine, a feast for carnivores, and the pan-fried scallops with celeriac purée left us wanting more. Wild mushroom and gnocchi stroganoff was bound with a creamy sauce, served with perfectly cooked rice and a fresh, crisp salad; whilst Moroccan fish tagine with sultana cous cous added an exotic twist to the meal. Irish bread-and-butter pudding had naughtily but deliciously been enhanced with Baileys, whilst the apple sorbet was refreshing and bursting with a tangy fruitiness. We sampled a couple of the less expensive options from the comprehensive wine list and were most pleased with the result - thought has clearly gone into building the wide-ranging selection.

The personal care from the owners is apparent in every aspect of this establishment, and their appointment of a Moroccan chef with talent and flair was clearly a masterstroke. The unhurried atmosphere and attentive service from the charming staff make for enjoyable dining, whether you plump for traditional British fare or the more adventurous flavours. The quality and freshness of the food, generous portions and sensible pricing guarantee this restaurant's continued success.
