Just a stone's throw from Gloucester's beautiful medieval cathedral is Hedley's, a perfect place to relax with lunch or afternoon tea after exploring the city's sights. This fantastic coffee shop occupies a 16th-Century timber-framed building (Gloucester's oldest surviving retail premises) and exudes a unique character and charm, with some of the original beams still visible. The menu provides something for everyone, from hearty home-cooked breakfasts to a wide range of delicious sweet treats to enjoy with a freshly ground coffee or a pot of tea. Portuguese custard tarts fresh from the oven and slices of chocolate tiffin are particular specialities. Lunch choices include Hedley's signature doorstep sandwiches, homemade quiches and tarts, and a tantalising array of ever-changing daily specials, while the ice cream milkshakes (which are always blended to order) are a big hit with children. If the weather is good, there's outside seating where you can sip a coffee, admire the beautiful flower baskets and watch the world go by. For those in a bit more of a hurry, Hedley's Sandwich Bar next door offers breakfasts, lunches, snacks and drinks to take away. Either way, Hedley's is definitely a must if you're visiting Gloucester
