Within the original coach house at the rear of The George Hotel in the pretty market town of Newent - and offering excellent quality, generous portions and superb value for money - this restaurant is certain to become a firm favourite. Combining a restaurant and wine bar, furnishings are tasteful with dark wooden tables, leather sofas, real wooden flooring and a separate bar specifically servicing the restaurant and offering a choice of 12 wines at a very reasonably-priced £12 per bottle.

The menu offers a multitude of dining options; there's a bar menu, an à la carte menu that changes daily, lighter bites and vegetarian and vegan options. Chef Steve Jenkins' passion for cooking is clear, and he has ensured that there is something to suit everyone. I opted for a starter of wild Forest of Dean mushroom risotto served with chives and walnuts, while my partner decided on the rather unusual mussel, saffron and thyme soup served with freshly baked tomato bread. Both were fabulously tasty and nicely presented.

For mains my partner couldn't resist the south coast-caught haddock in a crispy beer batter served with house chips and mushy peas from the bar menu. I opted for a vegetarian choice of sweet potato ravioli served with a ratatouille sauce and Parmesan. Fresh local produce is used wherever possible and alternative choices included Madgetts Farm chicken and duck dishes sourced from Monmouthshire. From the grill come 32-day hung rump and sirloin steaks, supplied by the Vineyard at Ledbury, and hogett, which is a yearling lamb, all served with fresh seasonal vegetables. Homemade desserts and cheese are available to complete your experience, and everything is complemented by a choice of tea and coffee served with homemade truffles.

The restaurant offers themed evenings such as curry night (particularly popular in the adjoining pub), on Fridays a different fish dinner is available every week for only £4.95 and of course there is a traditional Sunday roast. Offering an original twist, a charity Sunday lunch was recently arranged offering 'free' lunch for a donation with all proceeds going to Air Ambulance and special care baby units.
