The Lighter Inn
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
Topsham is a wonderful little village on the outskirts of Exeter, which is steeped in maritime history. The Lighter Inn is set in a perfect position on the quay, with oodles of outside seating for those long summer nights taking in the stunning views across the estuary. Once inside, there is a calming, warm atmosphere which goes hand in hand with a great range of local ales and comforting homemade food. The Lighter Inn is family-friendly so nobody has to miss out – even your four-legged friends are welcome.
To drink, I highly recommend the Badger Tanglefoot beer, which will get you in the mood for the hearty fare that the Hall & Woodhouse brand is known for. We plumped for a starter of whole baked Camembert spiked with garlic and thyme, served with chutney, rustic sourdough and celery and carrot sticks. For the main course, my wife opted for tuna Niçoise, which featured a superbly cooked steak on a bed of refreshing salad, topped with a soft-boiled egg. I couldn’t resist the mini pies – both the steak and Tanglefoot beer, and chicken and ham hock, were delicious, perched atop buttery mash. The presentation of both dishes was excellent, and the portion sizes were perfectly judged to leave us feeling satisfied, but with just enough room for one of the tempting traditional desserts – don’t miss the seasonal fruit crumble with custard.
