Boasting a delightful waterside location and that quintessential Hall & Woodhouse home-from-home feel, you’re sure to be charmed by this family-friendly joint. Overlooking the estuary in the pretty town of Topsham, The Lighter Inn is a warm and welcoming pub that’s popular with locals and visitors alike. Dating back to the 1800s, this charming venue is steeped in maritime history, and has plenty of outdoor seating where you can take in the wonderful views and watch the myriad of local wildlife.

Our host greeted us enthusiastically and showed us to our table, where we sampled refreshing pints of Badger’s Tanglefoot ale. Our meal began with juicy tiger prawns pan-fried in delicious garlic butter, and a refreshingly innovative vegan dish of smoked paprika and maple tempeh skewers, with cherry tomatoes and red peppers. Both dishes impressed with neat presentation and an outstanding combination of flavours. I followed with the chorizo chicken – melt-in-the-mouth braised chicken leg bathed in a stew of tomatoes, red peppers, courgette and smoky chorizo, accompanied by creamy mash, wilted kale and spinach. My partner was just as satisfi ed with his choice of cod au vin, comprising delicate roasted cod marinated in red wine, garlic and shallots and served with mash, kale and a red wine and bacon sauce. We finished with a trio of mini puds – three petite versions of coffee and walnut panna cotta, Black Forest sundae and seasonal fruit crumble. What could be better?
