Overlooking the estuary in the pretty town of Topsham, The Lighter Inn is a warm and welcoming pub that’s popular with locals and visitors alike. Dating back to the 1800s, this charming venue is steeped in maritime history, and has plenty of outdoor seating where you can take in the wonderful views and watch the myriad of wildlife.

Inside we found comfy seating and cosy decor. Our host greeted us enthusiastically and showed us to our table, where we sampled refreshing pints of Tanglefoot ale. Our meal began with Blue Vinney-stuffed mushrooms accompanied by focaccia and garlic mayo from the specials board, and flavoursome crab mayonnaise, comprising brown and white crab meat with chives and mayonnaise, served with malted sourdough bread. Both dishes impressed with neat presentation and an outstanding combination of flavours. We followed with delicate gilthead bream fillet atop smoky white bean and bacon cassoulet with wilted kale and a juicy chicken Caesar burger comprising chargrilled chicken fillets, smoked streaky bacon, cheese and Caesar mayo with skinny fries.

We finished with a trio of mini puds – three petite versions of coffee and walnut panna cotta, Eton Mess, and seasonal fruit crumble with custard. Bring along the whole family or cosy up with a loved one; either way you’re sure to enjoy The Lighter Inn.
