A cosy, authentic local eatery, Café Catalan has made a good name for itself in the three years that it has been open, and it’s no wonder. With a relaxed, informal atmosphere, the restaurant serves an exciting range of tapas, and the bar offers a selection of Spanish sherries as well as a good choice of wine. The staff are really welcoming and it pays off, as many customers are regulars, and newcomers are made to feel right at home.

Whether you’re a meat-eater, fish enthusiast or vegetarian, the menu offers an appetising choice. Chef-patron Paul Greenhead isn’t new to the restaurant business – he’s previously been awarded two AA rosettes – and it shows in his inventive and fl avoursome food. We ordered from the day’s specials, selecting rich, warming and luxurious crab, prawn and samphire soup, and fabulously soft, succulent confit duck with plums and sherry vinegar. Another of our favourite dishes was a delicious plate of flash-fried green beans with garlic and almond sauce. Puddings demonstrated imaginative combinations while staying true to their Spanish roots. The warming dulce de leche rice pudding with brandied prune compote was simply stunning, and the chilli and lemon baked cheesecake with beetroot and blackberry coulis and candied pink pepper was the perfect end to a wonderfully inspiring feast.
