Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
161 Sidwell Street, Exeter, EX4 6RH
Sidwell Street may not instantly spring to mind as a location for a relaxed cosmopolitan bar, but the fantastic Amber Rooms is more than at home here. With contemporary design and specially imported works by Vietnamese artist Bui Huu Hung, this is the perfect place for cool summer pavement dining, enjoying a cold glass of Chablis, or simply watching the world go by. Great service and deep funky music reflect the simple but creative all-day lunch menus. Realisation that international DJ Iain 'Lazy' Smith co-owns The Amber Rooms, brings clarity; the music, food, art and decor all fit together perfectly. Light bites, paninis, huge salad bowls, and three fresh home-made vegetarian pasta dishes are on offer. For the meat-lovers among you, go for the prize-winning home-made steak and potato, pork and apple or chicken and leek pies served with a good choice of side orders. On Sundays indulge in the traditional roasts. The fresh tagliatelli coated in pesto with creamy partridge blue cheese sauce and mushrooms (£6.95) will stay in the mind, longer than on the plate - superb. There are 12 sensibly priced new world wines on the list, or for those with a fondness for the finer things in life, the Roederer Cristal is always chilling. If this isn't enough, and you ask nicely, you can have access to Iain's amazing private cellar. A completely different experience - sample it.
