Sidmouth is renowned for its fishermen and The Loft, which is situated in the centre of town on a pedestrianised area, certainly makes the most of them. This quirky venue boasts a Mediterranean twist with all the elements of a top-notch European eatery. Inside, the dining area is large and spacious with a nautical theme enhanced by local art, rustic furniture and a well-stocked bar that offers a fine range of wine and spirits.

To drink, we opted for Old Charlie local ale and elderflower bubbly, which accompanied our superb starters. I went for the smoked mackerel pâté with toasted ciabatta and pickled cucumber, while my partner plumped for grilled chicken with garlic and chorizo on a bed of pepper, couscous and salad – it was very tasty and refreshing, the perfect starter. Both of our main courses were similarly accomplished, from the creamy salmon gnocchi to the grey mullet fillet in a mustard sauce, accompanied by aubergine gratin and mange tout. The seafood at The Loft is fantastically fresh and expertly prepared. There’s a great choice of homemade desserts for those that still have room; we enjoyed a warm Bakewell tart accompanied by clotted cream ice cream and rhubarb crème brûlée served with shortbread and a coffee to round things off.

The twinkling lights that adorn the balcony invite many customers in, but it’s the stand-out cuisine and lovely service from Natasha and her team that compel diners at The Loft to return time and again.
