Dukes is a four-star family-run inn at the very centre of Sidmouth's Regency Esplanade. Completely refurbished by owners Mark and Joanna Seward, it has a relaxed and welcoming ambience. The food is excellent, made even more enjoyable thanks to young, enthusiastic staff who make you feel relaxed and ready to tuck in. Up to 100 can be seated in the spacious dining areas inside and, if the weather is kind, a similar number outside. Either way, you will enjoy the contemporary English style of food - even vegetarians and those with allergies are deliciously catered for on the excellent menu. Dukes caters for parties too and is incredibly family friendly.

Starters range from £4.25 to £6.25, with plenty of choice from either the main or specials menu. The herb-peppered mozzarella with Mediterranean vegetable salad, and chargrilled Cornish sardines with homemade salsa and fresh bread, suited us perfectly for starters. We followed these with a sublimely succulent confit of crispy duck and Dauphinois potatoes (£11.25) and, from the specials menu, a local whole grilled plaice with purple sprouting and new potatoes (£11.95); although I nearly opted for the pan-roasted rump of lamb with garlic roasted potatoes, ratatouille and fresh basil pesto (£12.75). Desserts were priced between £4.25 and £4.50; the chocolate mousse with shortbread biscuits was as light as a feather, but held down brilliantly by the local clotted cream, and the Yarde Farm ice cream merits a visit all on its own. The wine list matches the menu perfectly, sensibly priced and with 30 bins. House wine is £11.50 and an astonishing 25 wines are sold by the glass - the Calapate malbec at £3.95 being a particular star.

Our waitress took great pride in telling us that the staff eat at Dukes on their days off, and I can understand why. We joined a large number of regulars who were enjoying the hugely popular off-season offers - giant fish and chips, mushy peas and chips £6.95 on Tuesdays; two pizzas for £12 on Mondays; and two 8oz steaks and a bottle of wine for £20 every Wednesday.
