The Barton Cross Hotel

0.5 miles
Huxham, Stoke Canon, Nr. Exeter, EX5 4EJ
This 16th-Century longhouse appears untouched at first glance. Immeasurable care has been taken to retain all of the features and idiosyncrasies that make a building of its age so special, but without compromise when it comes to comfort for the 21st-Century visitor. It is perhaps this careful balancing act that accounts for the popularity and unwavering success of this pretty Devonshire hideaway.

Tucked away in beautiful countryside, just four miles from historic Exeter, The Barton Cross Hotel is the perfect destination for a relaxing break. The lovely bedrooms, combined with the hotel's close proximity to local attractions, makes The Barton Cross an obvious choice. Its wonderful restaurant is totally deserving of its award-winning credentials and reputation for exceptional food. AA rosette awards, plus recommendations in both the Michelin Guide and Good Food Guide give some idea as to the standard of food you can expect from head chef Nick Beattie. His imaginative menus are seasonal and make the best use of Devon's natural larder. Meat and game comes from local farms and fish is from Brixham. Absolutely everything is made from scratch, from the canapés to the ice cream, chutneys and bread. The menu changes every four to five weeks, but you can expect to find such starters as risotto of local Exe mussels with saffron, and the innovative wild mushroom and chestnut ragout on toasted brioche. Breast of duck with blackberry sauce and lemon sole stuffed with salmon mousse and served with almond sauce are just two representations of the wonderful food to be expected. The superb service, candlelit ambience and countryside setting all complement the most important reason to visit this wonderful establishment: the food.
