Located in the rolling east Devon countryside and set in colourful, well cared-for gardens, The Five Bells is a 16th-Century thatched country pub that was originally a farmhouse.

Inside, gleaming copper and brass, as well as many artefacts and watercolours, complement the inglenook fireplace and oak beams.

The Five Bells presents an imaginative menu that uses high quality local ingredients, producing dishes which are superb in appearance and flavour. A selection of starters is available at £4 to £5, a range of main courses includes vegetarian and fish dishes at £8 to £13, and there is a choice of prime West Country steaks from £13 to £16. The generous portions are served with a selection of vegetables, and if you can manage anything more, the pudding menu offers home-made delights at £4 to £5.

Real ales, beers, lagers, a wide range of soft drinks and an extensive wine list are on offer at reasonable prices. This family-friendly venue is a 20-minute drive from Exeter and well worth the trip.

From Exeter, proceed through Pinhoe and Broadclyst towards Cullompton, and turn right to Clyst Hydon, opposite Fagins.

From the M5 going south, leave the motorway at junction 28, go through Cullompton and turn left for Clyst Hydon. From Honiton, turn right at Fairmile and proceed through Talaton. From Sidmouth, go through Ottery to Fairmile, and then Talaton.
