Brampford Speke, Nr. Exeter, EX5 5DP
In the pretty conservation village of Brampford Speke, with its thatched cottages and wonderful situation on both the Exe Valley Way and Devonshire Heartland Way, you will find The Lazy Toad - an 18th-century Grade II listed inn. A warm welcome from the friendly staff awaits you at this cosy establishment, which features log fires burning in winter.

The daily changing menu is produced using local, seasonal ingredients. Sample smoked haddock risotto, spring onions, parmesan crisps and shellfish cream for starters, Devon rump of lamb with wild garlic pearl barley, roasted shallots and red wine salsify to follow, and then finish with dark chocolate and orange gateaux with hazelnuts and cardamom tuile. Alternatively, you can enjoy traditional, home-cooked starters such as homemade chicken and prune terrine with pickled vegetables and toasted brioche or classic moules marinières accompanied by crusty bread. Follow this with classic mains like Toad's crispy fish and chips or Aggie's beef burger in a toasted brioche bun, and opt for a pudding of poached rhubarb, chilled vanilla custard, shortbread and wild primroses or alternatively the glazed banana bread with toffee sauce and peanut butter ice cream.

Up to four local ales and up to 16 wines by the glass, including local Sharpham wines, are all available - ideal accompaniments to the Devon cheeseboard. In summer, you can enjoy your meal in the lovely beer garden. You can even stay in one of five very different bedrooms - perfect for those wanting to explore nearby Exeter and beyond
