As a base for exploring the attractions of Moreton-in-Marsh, Bourton-on-the-Water and The Slaughters, Stow can't be beaten; and The Conservatory Restaurant at The Grapevine Hotel is a lovely stop-off for hungry explorers.

The 17th-Century building is typical of the area's architecture, with a grand yet welcoming frontage, but what sets the candlelit restaurant apart is the century-old Black Hamburgh vine growing inside it and spreading across the ceiling. The vine's striking prettiness is enhanced by rose and eucalyptus table decorations and trompe l'oeil images framed by lime-washed shutters. Two and three-course prix fixe menus are offered at truly exceptional value. Seared king scallops, glazed crottin of goat's cheese and roast quail with pancetta and Port jus were featured starters on the evening of my visit, and my sea bass with artichoke risotto was exquisite. My friend's open tart of wild mushroom and spinach, with balsamic-roasted cherry tomatoes and Parmesan cream could have seduced the most hardened carnivore. For dessert, the red-wine-poached pear and the assiette of rhubarb were both fruity and refreshing.

The Conservatory wine list offers bountiful choice. The waiting staff have a knack for making you feel that your unadulterated happiness is their prime concern, without being overly fussy. Don't delay in making plans to dine under the vine in lovely Stow-on-the-Wold.
