Nestled in beautiful countryside near Cirencester, The Baker's Arms is set in the picturesque village of Somerford Keynes and is as warm and homely as its fare. An exterior covered in gorgeous flowering wisteria, low-beamed ceilings and tiled floors all combine to create a rustic charm that befits this quintessentially English dining pub, complete with a charming garden in which to enjoy the summer sun.

The ingredients, as well as many of the ales, are locally sourced - beef comes from a neighbouring farm and the popular Budding ale is brewed in nearby Stroud. As the name denotes, the 17th-Century Baker's Arms was once a bakehouse, and, fittingly, the establishment still bakes its own fresh bread - there is nothing more satisfying than a warm slice dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

We settled into the relaxed ambience of The Baker's and began our meal with rustic homemade leek and potato soup (accompanied by the aforementioned unbeatable bread) and olives. This was followed by succulent rib-eye with sautéed potatoes and mushrooms, and a delicious plate of handmade fishcakes - packed with fresh fish and served with a piquant sweet chilli sauce. Desserts are traditional with the occasional twist. We indulged in apple crumble with homemade vanilla custard which was, quite simply, second to none.
